Make Hong Kong Great Again,一個苦心盡力都要Make America Great Again呢?

Put a finger down if...

Put a finger down if you have been called a racial slur.

Put a finger down if you've been followed in a store unnecessarily.

Put a finger down if someone has crossed the street to avoid passing you.

Put a finger down if you've had someone clinch their purse in an elevator with you.

Put a finger down if you've had someone step off of an elevator to keep from riding with you.

Put a finger down if you've been accused of not being able to afford something expensive.

Put a finger down if you have had fear in your heart when being stopped by the police.

Put a finger down if you have never been given a pass on a citation that you deserved.

Put a finger down if you have been stopped or detained by police for no valid reason.

Put a finger down if you have been bullied solely because of your race.

Put a finger down if you have been denied service solely because of the colour of your skin.

Put a finger down if you've ever had to teach your child how not to get killed by the police.

Any fingers left?  That's privilege.

The Problem with Saying Nothing

Ellen DeGeneres:

I have said this on my social media, but I want to say it again to my viewers.  I stand with the protesters who are exercising their rights, and I want to be an ally fighting for change.

As a white person. I don't always know what to say.  I think right now white people have to just sit in our discomfort, and we have to admit that there's a lot we don't know about black people's lives and about a black person's experience.

And there is horrible injustice towards black people that has been ignored for far too long. I've tried to use my platform to raise awareness on different issues over the years.  I like to think that I'm doing my best.  But I think it's time that we have to look at ourselves and we have to say we have not done enough.  I want to learn how to be a better person, how to do better.  I was the dancing lady for a little while, and now I want to help educate my audience.  I want to educate myself.

I want to say hi to my friend tWitch.  tWitch, I think a lot of people are being silent right now because everyone is scared they're going to say the wrong thing.

tWitch:

Yes, I mean, there's a part of me that gets it because we have a society now that's like: on social media if you say the wrong thing, you get ripped apart.  Here's the reason that's problematic, and it can go on many different things, right?

Like, as a man (myself), there's going to be times that I'm going to have to speak up for misogyny and all kinds of stuff like that, but I can't be silent because I'm afraid of saying the wrong thing.  Out of love for the person that you're speaking up for, you have to be willing to make that mistake and then go back and correct it.  So then you know—because if you don't make the mistake, just by doing nothing, then that still is a stance.  A non-stance is a stance at this point in time.  You know what I mean?

So when it comes to race relations and how we're yelling Black Lives Matter and speaking up for the injustices that we as black people have faced in this country for centuries now, at this point, we just need alliesWe don't need you to be perfect because—excuse my French—the [...] we're fighting against is not perfect.  So we don't need a well-formulated setWe need people that care.  We need people that are going to be willing to face the raw, uncut "I make mistakes, but I'll bounce right back to be with y'all again."  We need that.

So, I understand there's a little bit of resistance, a little bit of hesitant forward motion for that.  But at the end of the day, you you know, I love you.  You have many many many people of color, black people that love you that will... I'm not talking about the social media folks. I'm talking about people that could call you and from a place of love like "Yo, I saw what you're trying to say, but next time word it this way because this." And you know it's coming from a place of love rather than like "We're going to tear a celebrity down!"  You know what I'm saying? We don't have to worry about that right now.

What we have to do is we have to connect on a human level and make sure that we're showing each other that we care.  On the flip side of that, we also have to find a place of patience and not rip each other apart for trying.  Sometimes things are going to be misspoken because we all don't have the same experiences.  So it's a lot of things that need to work at the same time, but none of us as a people on either side can stop trying.

For Hongkongers fearing for their way of life, Britain will provide an alternative

  • UK is prepared to change its immigration rules if Beijing imposes its national security law on Hong Kong

  • ‘It is precisely because we welcome China as a leading member of the world community that we expect it to abide by international agreements’

There is something wonderful about the fact that a small island in the Pearl River Delta rose to become a great trading city and commercial powerhouse of East Asia. Wonderful, but not accidental or fortuitous.

Hong Kong succeeds because its people are free. They can pursue their dreams and scale as many heights as their talents allow. They can debate and share new ideas, expressing themselves as they wish. And they live under the rule of law, administered by independent courts.

With their abilities thus released, Hong Kong’s people have shown they can achieve almost anything. They have prospered hand in hand with China’s economic renaissance; today their home is one of the richest cities in the world and hundreds of mainland companies have chosen to list on the Hong Kong stock exchange.

So China has a greater interest than anyone else in preserving Hong Kong’s success. Since the handover in 1997, the key has been the precious concept of “one country, two systems”, enshrined in Hong Kong’s Basic Law and underpinned by the Joint Declaration signed by Britain and China.

This guarantees Hong Kong’s “high degree of autonomy” with only limited exceptions such as foreign affairs, defence or in a state of emergency. The declaration adds: “The current social and economic systems in Hong Kong will remain unchanged, and so will the life style” including essential “rights and freedoms”.

Yet last month, the National People’s Congress in Beijing decided to impose a national security law on Hong Kong, which would curtail its freedoms and dramatically erode its autonomy.

If China proceeds, this would be in direct conflict with its obligations under the Joint Declaration, a legally binding treaty registered with the United Nations.

Britain would then have no choice but to uphold our profound ties of history and friendship with the people of Hong Kong.

Today, about 350,000 of the territory’s people hold British National Overseas passports and another 2.5 million would be eligible to apply for them. At present, these passports allow visa-free access to the United Kingdom for up to six months.

If China imposes its national security law, the British government will change our immigration rules and allow any holder of these passports from Hong Kong to come to the UK for a renewable period of 12 months and be given further immigration rights, including the right to work, which could place them on a route to citizenship.

This would amount to one of the biggest changes in our visa system in British history. If it proves necessary, the British government will take this step and take it willingly.

Many people in Hong Kong fear their way of life – which China pledged to uphold – is under threat. If China proceeds to justify their fears, then Britain could not in good conscience shrug our shoulders and walk away; instead we will honour our obligations and provide an alternative.

I hope it will not come to this. I still hope that China will remember that responsibilities go hand in glove with strength and leadership. As China plays a greater role on the international stage – commensurate with its economic prowess – then its authority will rest not simply on its global weight but on its reputation for fair dealing and magnanimity.

Britain does not seek to prevent China’s rise; on the contrary we will work side-by-side on all the issues where our interests converge, from trade to climate change. We want a modern and mature relationship, based on mutual respect and recognising China's place in the world.

And it is precisely because we welcome China as a leading member of the world community that we expect it to abide by international agreements.

I also struggle to understand how the latest measure might ease tensions in Hong Kong. For much of last year, the territory experienced large protests, triggered by an ill-judged attempt to pass a law allowing extradition from Hong Kong to the mainland.

If China now goes further and imposes national security legislation, this would only risk inflaming the situation.

For our part, the UK raised our grave concerns about Hong Kong in the Security Council last week; we will continue to do so in international forums.

Instead of making false allegations – such as claiming that the UK somehow organised the protests – or casting doubt over the Joint Declaration, I hope that China will work alongside the international community to preserve everything that has allowed Hong Kong to thrive.

Britain wants nothing more than for Hong Kong to succeed under “one country, two systems”. I hope that China wants the same. Let us work together to make it so.
